BASIC GAMES:

Pac man

Duck and Run

Basketball

Football - 2 hand touch

Octopus

Red Rover

Freeze Tag

Freeze Dance - Play music and hit the pause button - last person moving is out

Red Light / Green Light - In this game, one person plays the "stop light" and the rest try to touch him/her.  At the start, all the children form a line about 15 feet away from the stop light.  The stop light faces away from the line of kids and says "green light". At this point the kids are allowed to move towards the stoplight.  At any point, the stop light may say "red light!" and turn around. If any of the kids are caught moving after this has occurred, they are out.  Play resumes when the stop light turns back around and says "green light".  The stop light wins if all the kids are out before anyone is able to touch him/her.  Otherwise, the first player to touch the stop light wins the game and earns the right to be "stop light" for the next game.

OR

[This is one basically the same except that IT is always facing the players]
We had another way of playing "red light/ green light".  Find a large field, or yard, about the size of a tennis court to a football field.
All the kids line up on one side. the person who is "it" stays in the middle of the field. When "it" says green light, all the kids run as fast as they can. When "it" says red light, everyone stops. whoever doesn't stop is out. "it" keeps saying red light or green light until all the kids are out or has gone from one end of the field back to where they started from.

Remember, don't run too fast or when "it" says red light, you won't be able to stop.
The rule we used is you have two seconds to come to a complete stop or hit the ground.
Another hint is to always wear pants. you can kneel or flop down on red light to stop yourself. Just be careful.
The last person to make it back to the starting line is "it".

Doggy, Doggy, Where Is Your Bone? - A student will play the part of the dog. He or she will sit in a chair with their back to the class. An eraser or another object was put under the chair. That was the bone. While the dog was turned around with his or her eyes closed someone would sneak up and steal the bone and hide it somewhere on his person. Then everyone would sing: Doggy, Doggy, where's your bone? Somebody's stole it from your home. Guess who it might be you. Then the dog has three chances to guess who took it. Sometimes it was left under his or her chair. If the dog guessed right then he got to do it again. If he guessed wrong than the person who had the bone got a turn as the dog.

Silent Ball - Pass a ball in a circle to the player opposite of you, you cannot pass the ball to the person next to you or throw the ball below the waist. If the person misses the ball they sit down, if the person throwing the ball throws below the waist or in a manner uncatchable by the other player they are out.  No talking is the major rule of the game! Keep the other people guessing if they are the one to receive the ball next!

Dodge Ball - Game starts with all the dodge balls in the center of the court.  After "you" call dodge ball the teams run in the center and grab the balls (they cannot throw the ball until they return to the back court area which they started from).  I play with each team having 3 jail breaks (when a jail break is called that team has 5 seconds to get in, and cannot get out during that time).  Only the team captain can call the jail breaks and he/she can call them while in/out of the game.  The objective is to throw the ball at the opposite team player.  Once they are hit with the ball they are out - no exceptions! If you throw the ball and they catch it - you are out and a team member on their side comes in! vise versa. Also if the other team member steps over the line they are out.  They cannot reach over the line to steal the other teams ball (or they are out).  The team with the most dodge balls cannot hold onto them, they must throw them (otherwise the game will last forever).  Play until everyone is out I usually play best of 5 (or 3 if short on time).  You can also add jail breaks by using the gym basketball hoops. Some people play by; if they hit the backboard all the team players are in, or if they only make a basket! I'll leave it up to you (these jail breaks do not get the 5 second rule!).

Snatch! - While the players wait in another room, put several small items on the table. Make sure that the kids don't see the items prior to game's start. (You can arrange the items any way you wish.)  Invite the kids to gather around the table. Have them take a look and remember the items. Next, a chosen player closes her eyes and turns away from the table. Meanwhile, point to another player to snatch one item from the table and hide it from view.  Then the first player opens her eyes. She gets several tries to guess which item was taken and who snatched it. If she doesn't get it right, the culprit confesses and reveals the stolen item.  Put the item back on the table prior to the next round. The player who snatched the item last time closes his eyes and faces away from the group. Pick another person to get the item off the table. Keep playing until everyone had a chance to snatch and guess.

Ha Ha Ha - Some child party games will bring a lot of laughter -- this is definitely one of them.  Have the kids sit or stand in a circle. One of them begins the game by saying "Ha," as solemnly as she can. Then the next player says "Ha, Ha" and the third person says "Ha, Ha, Ha." The game continues with each child adding a "Ha" during his or her turn. All the players in the circle must keep a straight face during the game.  Anyone who smiles or laughs goes out. But now they have a chance to make silly faces and noises trying to get the kids in the circle to laugh. They can make the facial expressions or sounds, but can't touch the other players. The child who keeps a straight face the longest is the winner.

Chain Reaction - Child party games that involve dancing are a lot of fun! Kids will have a great time playing this game.  Before starting the game, choose one player to be "It" and have him leave the room. Pick another player to be the Dance Teacher and get the kids to scatter around the area.  When you start the music, get the Dance Teacher to initiate a dance move while everyone else imitates it. Then you invite the player who is "It" back to try to guess who is leading the dance.  The Dance Teacher must change the moves continuously throughout the song, little by little, without being too obvious that she is the leader. Tell other dancers to be subtle when they follow the Dance Teacher. They should only glance at the leader without staring, or they will give the person away too easily.  When the child who is "It" guesses who the Dance Teacher is, choose other players for the two positions until everyone had a chance to lead and to guess.

Grab The Ghost - Who's the ghost with the most? This game of quick reflexes and steady nerves lets you find out.
What You Need:
Paper towels
Small balls
Yarn
Markers
Pennies
Large paper circle
Large funnel
Die / Markers - for color

Instructions:
1.  Before the party, make ghosts by draping a piece of paper towel around a small ball, such as a Superball (or in a pinch, a wadded-up paper towel). Cinch the towel around the ball and secure with one end of a 2-foot length of yarn.

2.  Have the kids draw a face on their ghosts with markers.

3.  At the start of the game, each player is given ten pennies. Choose one person to be the goblin. The other players lay their ghosts on the large paper circle and hold on to the yarn leash. The goblin holds the funnel, upside down, at least 2 feet above the circle.

4.  The goblin chooses two numbers on a die, announces them to the group, then rolls. If either of the chosen numbers appears, the players try to pull their ghosts out of the circle before the goblin can slam the funnel down over them. If a player is caught, he must give the goblin a penny. If the chosen numbers do not appear, but the players panic and yank their ghosts out of the circle anyway, it's another penny to the goblin. The goblin, for his part, is allowed to fake a funnel slam, but if he touches any ghost, he must shell out a penny to each player. After three rolls of the die, the next player takes over as goblin. Play is over when one player runs out of pennies. The player with the most coins wins.

MAD Science!!!!

Unpoppable Balloon
Often, physics reveals that what seems to be the most likely explanation isn't always the correct one. (Remember that old theory about the sun moving around the earth?) Take something as simple as piercing a balloon with a pin. It's logical to assume that the balloon pops because air escapes through the hole. But as this simple experiment proves, there's something much more interesting going on.

What You Need:
• Latex balloon • Clear tape • Straight pin

Steps:
1.  Blow up a balloon and stick two 2-inch pieces of tape to the surface in an X.
2.  Use the pin to puncture the balloon at the center of the cross. Even though you'll be able to feel air leaking through the hole, the balloon will stubbornly refuse to pop (at least for quite a while).
3.  Watch the hole through the tape. It will widen into more of a crack (if it doesn't, try squeezing the balloon to help things along). When the crack nears the edge of the tape, the balloon will suddenly pop.

What's Happening:
When you puncture the balloon, it's not air rushing out the hole that causes it to pop. Instead, what actually occurs is something that physicists call a catastrophic crack propagation. The hole spreads, in effect ripping open the balloon. The tape, however, slows down the process dramatically, postponing the pop.
If you think that's cool, consider this: when the tear in the balloon finally makes it past the tape, it starts to rip through the latex faster than the speed of sound. So that pop you hear is actually a sonic boom.

A Bubble Machine
If you ask your child how much air can fit in a bottle, she'll probably say it depends on the size of the bottle. True, but there's another factor to consider, and that's temperature. A bottle can hold more cold air than warm air. With this simple activity, your child can see for herself.

What You Need:
• An empty 20-ounce plastic soda bottle, without the cap • A glass of water (wide enough for the top of the soda bottle to fit in) • Bubble solution (you can make your own by mixing a few drops of dish soap with a cup of water)

Steps:
Place the soda bottle mouth down in the glass of water and watch what happens: not much. Dry the bottle and chill it in the freezer for 5 minutes. Once again, place it in the glass. Without being squeezed, the bottle will blow underwater bubbles.
Return the bottle to the freezer for another 5 minutes. Meanwhile, pour a little bubble solution into a shallow bowl. When the bottle is ready, dip the mouth in the bubble solution, then set the bottle upright on a table. A bubble should start to form almost immediately. When the bubble bursts, re-dip the bottle; it should keep on blowing bubbles until it nears room temperature.

What's Happening:
When you put the bottle in the freezer, the air inside it gets cold. That's because air, just like everything else, is composed of molecules (tiny bits of matter) that react to changes in the environment. The colder the air, the closer together the molecules get. Because it's denser than warm air, you can fit more of it in the bottle. When you take the bottle out of the freezer, the air inside it starts to warm up and expand. The bottle can't contain it all. As it escapes, the air pushes against the water in the glass (or, in step 3, the bubble solution on the rim), creating bubbles.

Ivy League - Game Idea(s)
Army Dodge Ball - In this version they can only get out by a shot to the upper torso area, if they are hit in the legs they must limp around as if they were shot in the leg if both legs are taken out then they must crawl on the floor and protect themselves with what limb remains active without being hit in the upper torso area.  If one of the arms is hit, that arm is completely useless and they must use the other arm to throw the ball. NO JAIL BREAKS, NO CATCHING THE BALL!!! - You can't catch a bullet!  You must completely dodge the ball at all times - once you are out, you are out until a new game begins!
